The Swamp Fox was the nickname of South Carolinian Militia Revolutionary War General Francis Marion. The movie, "The Patriot" starring Mel Gibson was loosely based off of Marion's life. Marion became a Revolutionary War legend for his unconventional fighting tactics in the swamps of South Carolina and Georgia. His fierce night surprise attacks terrified the British red coats and made him an American Revolutionary iconic hero. A lot of things in South Carolina and America is still named in reference to Marion. Columbia and the Midlands are home to the Swamp Fox Armory, a gun shop, and McEntire Air Force Base is home to the 169th Fighter Wing and 157th Fighter Squadron of the South Carolina National Air Guard nicknamed the Swamp Foxes.
