Why Swamp Fox Patriot: Story Behind the Swamp Fox Patriot

The Swamp Fox was the nickname of South Carolinian Militia Revolutionary War General Francis Marion. The movie, "The Patriot" starring Mel Gibson was loosely based off of Marion's life.

Marion became a Revolutionary War legend for his unconventional fighting tactics in the swamps of South Carolina and Georgia. His fierce night surprise attacks terrified the British red coats and made him an American Revolutionary iconic hero.

A lot of things in South Carolina and America is still named in reference to Marion. Columbia and the Midlands are home to the Swamp Fox Armory, a gun shop, and McEntire Air Force Base is home to the 169th Fighter Wing and 157th Fighter Squadron of the South Carolina National Air Guard nicknamed the Swamp Foxes.

There's the Swamp Fox Club at Francis Marion University and the Regal Swamp Fox Theatre in Florence, SC.

You can visit the Swamp Fox Restaurant and Bar inside the Francis Marion hotel in Charleston and order up a Dirty Swamp (Martini).

Some folks get married at Swamp Fox Farms, a low country event venue in Hardeeville, SC.

In Marion County SC there is the Swamp Fox Entertainment Complex.

There's Swamp Fox Distillery in Pendleton, SC. They make rum. It's not to be confused with Swamp Fox Distilling, Co., Buena Vista, Ga., where you can get a bottle of Francis Marion Continental Whiskey. If beer is more your style, Moon River Brewery, Savanah, Ga., will be happy to pour you there Swamp Fox American IPA.

You can travel to Marion, Ia., named after the Revolutionary War hero, where they host a Swamp Fox Festival that has been held for 30 plus years.

In the 1960's, Disney even made "The Swamp Fox" a TV mini-series starring Leslie Nielson as Francis Marion.

It doesn't get much more American with South Carolina roots than that and as we navigate through the swamp of political corruption I thought the name Swamp Fox Patriot couldn't be more appropriate.
